STEVEN URBERG—Winemaker
Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards

Steven Urberg’s finely tuned sense of focus, passion for detail, and strong science background are indispensable in crafting Gloria Ferrer sparkling and estate varietal wines. As a young man from Detroit, who came to California by way of U.C. Berkeley for graduate school in chemistry, Steven discovered that winemaking provides a way in which to use his innate technical ability in creating wine as an art.

His journey into winemaking began in 1995, when he decided to take a break from chemistry. He was offered a job at the Hess Collection, working in the cellar, and he never looked back. “The excitement of that first harvest at the Hess Collection inspired me to take a left turn from the path of chemistry research, return to graduate school at U.C. Davis, and pursue my new passion of winemaking,” says Urberg.

Steven first arrived at Gloria Ferrer during the harvest of 1996 and he returned in 2001 as a full-time member of the Gloria Ferrer winemaking team. He joined Bob Iantosca and Mike Crumly, who have grown grapes and made Gloria Ferrer wines together for more than a quarter century.
With his tremendous ability for hard work and focus, Steven Urberg integrates his scientific background with inspired artistry in crafting elegant and balanced Gloria Ferrer sparkling and estate varietal wines. “I enjoy the exercise in subtlety involved with making sparkling wines. The challenge lies in creating the delicate texture and mouthfeel, while maintaining balance with the fruit structure. The same challenge lies in Pinot Noir estate varietal wines, where blending to achieve the silky mouthfeel is as important as the balance of the fruit, spice, and earth characters that are so irresistible in Carneros Pinot Noir,” says Urberg. The diverse array of clones planted on the Gloria Ferrer estate vineyards, married with the Carneros terroir, result in a palate of flavors that is a dream come true to a scientist with an artistic bent.

Clearly, Steven has the discipline and talent required to create the Gloria Ferrer wines that are true expressions of the Carneros region — sparkling and estate varietal wines — vintage to vintage. Gloria Ferrer wines have been award over 400 gold medals over the last 5 years. When not making wine, Steven enjoys cooking, entertaining, woodworking, and gardening.

Zeke Neeley

Winemaker
KENWOOD VINEYARDS

Zeke Neeley, grew up in California but not the California people think of when they hear “California”.  The town of Daly City, south of San Francisco, has a climate more resembling foggy London which was why it was always such a joy for him to visit his grandparents in a sunny paradise called the Sonoma Valley.

That soft-spot for Sonoma wine country hung with him throughout his college years studying Biochemistry and later while living in San Francisco and working in the Biotech industry on cancer research.

Eventually, after finding that he and his wife spent every vacation visiting wine country, it dawned on Zeke what he wanted to do — become a winemaker!  After returning to UC Davis for a M.S. in Viticulture and Enology, Zeke worked at wineries in Santa Cruz, Carneros, and Napa—the last 10 years as a winemaker in Napa—and finally found his way to Kenwood.  All those years after burning his pale, Daly City skin in the Sonoma sun he has made it full circle and found a roundabout way to a childhood dream.

When not orchestrating the cellar, Zeke likes to spend his time with his wife and two children, watching baseball, and going for the occasional run.

Ryan Prichard

Winemaker
THREE STICKS WINES

Growing up in Northern California, it isn’t too hard to understand why Ryan fell in love with wine. But it was while he was 3,000 miles away while in college at Cornell University that his passion took off. While in his senior year, Ryan took a class, HADM 430 – Introduction to Wines, where every week he would learn about and taste wines from different regions from around the world. Needless to say this was an eye-opening experience. After graduating from Cornell, Ryan spent some years working at the management consulting firm, Accenture, and then at the luxury destination club, Exclusive Resorts. During this time, Ryan was able to build his appreciation for wine and travel to many of the best wine regions of the world.

But Ryan’s interest was not satisfied by just tasting great wines. He wanted to make them. While still working full time, he worked with family friends in Anderson Valley during crush and then after moving to Boulder, CO, he worked harvests at Boulder Creek Winery. Also while in Colorado, Ryan enrolled in and completed the UC Davis Certificate Program in Winemaking. It was during this course when Ryan decided for good that he would pursue winemaking as a career. Ryan and his wife moved back to California and Ryan joined on to work with Bob Cabral at Williams Selyem making world-class Pinot noir and Chardonnay. At Williams Selyem, Ryan was able to see how working with great vineyards along with a meticulous winemaking style can produce inspiring results. Next, Ryan worked at Copain Custom Crush (now called Punchdown Cellars) where he had the opportunity to work directly with dozens of winemakers of high-end boutique brands. Most recently, Ryan was the Assistant Winemaker at Medlock Ames winery where he worked to craft artisanal and sustainably-farmed wines in Healdsburg, CA.

As Associate Winemaker of Three Sticks Wines, Ryan is excited about crafting wines with character and finesse that showcase our unique vineyard sites.

“With iconic vineyards such as Durell and Gaps Crown, we are given the best ingredients to make truly spectacular wines. This and getting to work with such a talented and passionate team of people makes making wine at Three Sticks an incredible opportunity”

Jamie Benziger

Winemaker
BENZIGER FAMILY WINERY

While studying marketing at Loyola Marymount University and working summers selling tour tickets at the winery, Jamie realized she wanted the family business to be her future. Jamie transferred to Sonoma State University to complete her degree and added wine business to her studies. She interned in marketing with Gundlach Bundschu Winery but it wasn’t until her first harvest working the lab at Benziger that Jamie realized her heart was really in winemaking. Since then, Jamie has had incredible opportunities working in the wine labs at St. Francis and Bogle, traveling to New Zealand to work harvest at Villa Maria, and getting her hands dirty in the field at Enterprise Vineyards. Returning home to Sonoma in 2015, Jamie had the opportunity to work alongside the most incredible winemaker she knows; her dad, Joe Benziger. Mentored by her father and just as adventurous, Jamie is passionate about taking Imagery to a broader audience.
