Sense of Place

About the Artist
“I’m a child of the West Coast who grew up with a strong sense of place. I’ve always made art about my immediate environment,” Acker said. “Even before moving to the Valley of the Moon in 1997, I’d been infected with its charm and mysteries. Now my art is largely concerned with this place and I’ve made investigations of its history part of my art work.”

Acker has won numerous awards including the Pollock Krasner grant in 2010, and the Left Coast Annual Juror’s Exhibition Award at the Sanchez Art Center in 2012.

His work has been seen around the world and also around the valley. He is currently board president of the Sonoma Valley Grange where he helped to produce a colorful mural. Acker was educated as a painter and sculptor and earned an MFA in sculpture from San Francisco State University in 1989.

His drawings, paintings and photo collages examine the history and evolution of Sonoma Valley and his compelling observations about both the Valley and the Boyes Hot Springs area, where he lives, are documented in his artwork, which illustrates the transformation of a community.
