Grower/Family:

Keith and Cherie Hughes have owned Hughes Family Vineyards for more than 12 years. Specializing in Zinfandel and Syrah wines made from the grapes grown on their estate, the award winning wines have steadily grown in popularity in California and nationally. Before settling in Sonoma Valley. Keith was Chairman of a major financial services company and Cherie was a clinical psychologist. Today, Keith and Cherie dedicate their days to managing the vineyards. Half of their 25 acre property is under vine. Other crops from the gardens include olive, apple, pear, cherry, fig, and other fruit trees, and lavender, roses, multiple vegetable gardens and an expanse of native grasses - all farmed organically. The farm is also proudly environmentally sensitive running on 100% solar power and using well water for irrigation.

Vineyard Overview:

Strictly organic farming practices have been in use in the vineyards since their inception in 1997. The Hughes Family Vineyards are certified organic by the CCOF and are situated at the crossroads of three appellations: Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Mountain, and Bennett Valley. Soils are primarily volcanic. At an altitude of 825 feet, the microclimate is an ideal blend of cool nights and mornings followed by long, warm and sunny afternoons.

The 7 acre “Savannah” Syrah vineyard is three wire trellis and the 3 acre “Wild Turkey” Zinfandel vineyard is head pruned. Cover crops are planted after harvest and selected based on annual soil analysis. Drip irrigation is used as needed in the summer. Along with excellent terroir, aggressive crop management has resulted in unique, highly intense fruit. Average tons at harvest are 13-15 tones Syrah and 9-12 tons Zinfandel.

Grapes have been used primarily for Hughes Family Vineyards Zinfandel and Syrah wines. Approximately half of the tonnage has been sold to a few artisan winemakers each year.
